Mold requires moisture AND some type of organic surface for it to reproduce and flourish. This is why contamination is so common after a flooding event. If the technicians you hire don't address the source of the moisture problem and fix it permanently, there's a high likelihood the it will return. The Cleanup Doctors are pros at figuring out where the moisture is originating from, how severe the contamination event is, and then testing the mold with one or more of the following types of samples:
Ο Air Quality Sample
This type of sample is usually captured by a spore trap or specialized air pump
Ο Surface Sample
These are typically collected by a tape lift or swab sample
Ο Bulk Sample
This is where we take a small bulk piece of affected building material, typically drywall
After the initial sampling and testing phase has commenced, the contaminated area will have to be contained in order for the cleanup and removal process to begin. In severe cases where a large area has been affected, it may be necessary for the occupants to arrange other temporary living situations so that the technicians have space to work. This is also for the health and safety of the residents.

There are different levels for this process, depending on the size of the area being worked on. In most cases, we will be addressing Level 3 situations.
1.) Find and Repair the Moisture Issue
This is key in preventing the reproduction of spores.
2.) Isolate the Area that is Contaminated
All seams and openings for doors and windows will need to be covered with a special polyethylene plastic, and then taped so there are no breach points for the spores to escape.
3.) Contain the Mold
Mold spreads quickly when the spores are dry and physically agitated, thus causing them to go airborne. All HVAC systems will be turned off to prevent spreading. We use different containment procedures in order to keep the spores from spreading, such as negative air chambers.
4.) Air Filtration
Mold spores that have gone airborne will need to be “trapped”, and this is accomplished by using commercial air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums.
5.) Remove Contaminated Materials
We remove all water and/or mold damaged items from the room and discard. There are certain cases where personal items can be salvaged through our content decontamination and restoration process. This is particularly unlikely to work on any porous items, such as clothing and carpeting. Anti-microbial treatments will be applied to services to prevent new mold from forming.
Depending on severity, sometimes drywall and other building materials will have to be removed, as these can house colonies deep down where the cleanup process can’t penetrate without compromising the structure of the material. Once this phase is complete, it may be necessary to replace certain building materials, repaint, and even re-carpet affected areas.
