I Think There Is Mold, But I Can't See Any
There are countless cases where the homeowner either doesn’t see the mold, but is confident that it could be growing somewhere inconspicuous, such as behind some baseboards or in a corner that often goes unchecked. There are usually the more dangerous cases because we tend to dismiss any problems if we can’t actually see them with our own eyes. Toxic mold damage happens to be one of those rare examples. Take particular precaution if you see any combination of the following symptoms:
• Trouble breathing
• Runny nose and congestion
• Watery eyes
• Rashes or welts
• Above normal amount of sneezing
While these could very well be the result of seasonal allergies, there’s a much higher chance you could be sick from mold if you also see it in your home or office setting. Over the years, we’ve uncovered many cases where our customers noticed symptoms but didn’t take prompt action, and it resulted in them developing long term health issues. In rare cases, they’ve even turned life-threatening. What’s important here is that you collect all the facts and make the proper decision to take the next step of consulting professionals. What Causes Mold To Grow?
For mold growth to occur, there have to be the following requirements present.
1.) Spores: these are everywhere, and are usually harmless. But when combined with the other requirements, they can become dangerous.
2.) Food: this would apply to pretty much anything that is organic, or carbon-based. Are you starting to see why this stuff can be everywhere?
3.) Correct Temperatures: mold prefers the same temperatures that we humans like, and thrive even more in hot and humid environments
4.) Moisture: it doesn’t take a lot of moisture, but this is why flood damage is usually followed by some type of mold contamination.
The company you choose to hire will need to make fixing the moisture issue their number one priority, otherwise it’s likely the problem will just return. Your technician should follow a comprehensive plan to address any and all water damage issues and to make sure the factors leading to it are modified or repaired.
Once your Cleanup Doctor has done a visual inspection of your home, he will need to take a sample for testing. There are 3 common sample types: air quality sample, surface sample, and bulk sample. The last one is where they would actually have to remove some contaminated building material to test it.
The Steps of the Removal and Remediation Process
There are different levels for this process, depending on the size of the area being worked on. In most cases, we will be addressing Level 3 situations.
1.) Find and Repair the Moisture Issue
This is key in preventing the reproduction of spores.
2.) Isolate the Area that is Contaminated
All seams and openings for doors and windows will need to be covered with a special polyethylene plastic, and then taped so there are no breach points for the spores to escape.
3.) Contain the Mold
Mold spreads quickly when the spores are dry and physically agitated, thus causing them to go airborne. All HVAC systems will be turned off to prevent spreading. We use different containment procedures in order to keep the spores from spreading, such as negative air chambers.
4.) Air Filtration
Mold spores that have gone airborne will need to be “trapped”, and this is accomplished by using commercial air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums.
5.) Remove Contaminated Materials
We remove all water and/or mold damaged items from the room and discard. There are certain cases where personal items can be salvaged through our content decontamination and restoration process. This is particularly unlikely to work on any porous items, such as clothing and carpeting. Anti-microbial treatments will be applied to services to prevent new mold from forming.
Depending on severity, sometimes drywall and other building materials will have to be removed, as these can house colonies deep down where the cleanup process can’t penetrate without compromising the structure of the material. Once this phase is complete, it may be necessary to replace certain building materials, repaint, and even re-carpet affected areas.
